Stock refers to images that already exist. The term can apply to either an illustration or photograph. An artist has produced an image, either for himself or a client, and he sells it to you for a certain fee, which allows you to use that image for your project. There are two types of Stock images: Royalty-Free and Rights-Protected.
Assignment is the act of commissioning an artist to produce an original photograph or illustration for your project.
How you choose between stock and assignment varies from project to project. Think of how likely it is that someone has already produced the image you need. There are hundreds of thousands of stock images out there and you may find one that works. If however the photograph or illustration is of a particular, person, place or thing, or if you are looking for a very specific style, then you are looking to hire or commission an artist.
