What is the difference between Royalty-Free and Rights-Protected images?

Royalty-Free images are usually purchased by the disk, or directly from a website. Royalty-Free illustrations are sometimes referred to as “clip art”. The Term Royalty-Free means that the artist has already been compensated for the image, and the end user is free to use it without many restrictions.

Rights-Protected images are purchased for a particular use or duration. This usage is described very specifically to protect both the artist and the client. Whereas Royalty-Free images can be use by anyone for anything, Rights-Protected images provide the client with the safety in knowing that no one else is going to use this image during the duration of the contract. There have been many examples of competing companies buying the same Royalty-Free images and using them in their advertising campaigns. Once it happened to two major software developers at the same trade show. Rights protected images are more expensive than their royalty-free counterparts, but the quality and impact of the images is much greater.
